The Wemyss Caves on the Fife Coastal Path contain the largest collection of Pictish inscribed symbols in one place, together with animal figures and early Christian crosses. There is archaeological evidence for activity on and around the site for at least 4,000 years including Bronze Age farming, the ruins of the medieval Macduff Castle and 20th century coal mining.
The Save Wemyss Ancient Caves Society aims to secure the caves, carvings and other archaeological remains; manage and ensure safe access to them for the public; learn and understand more about the people who have lived and worked here through the ages; and share and celebrate the heritage of the Wemyss Caves. They offer regular tours by arrangement. Please email tours@wemysscaves.org to arrange a visit or book online.
The Wemyss Caves are a nationally important heritage site under threat from coastal erosion, structural instability and vandalism. The caves along with the remains of Macduff’s Castle are designated as a scheduled monument.
