About

Welcome to Methil Heritage Centre – Where History Meets Community Step into Methil Heritage Centre, a place where our local history is celebrated, and community comes alive.

Whether you have roots in the area or are simply curious, our centre offers a welcoming space for all. Our Historic Home Housed in Methil’s former Post Office, this beautiful red sandstone building dates back to 1936. It bears the rare Edward VIII royal crest and retains many original features like the telephone box décor and wooden panelling.

After closing in 2019, we reopened in April 2024 with support from Fife Council’s Community Renewal Fund. The Friends of Methil Heritage volunteer group played a crucial role in establishing the Heritage Centre, which opened its doors in 1991. Over the years, they have developed and maintained a vast archive of materials, including photographs. The group organises exhibitions and presents topics of interest for the local community, ensuring that the history of Methil and the broader Levenmouth area is preserved and shared with future generations.

Discover Our Exhibitions Explore our permanent exhibition, covering Methil’s history from the Bronze Age to its days as a tourist hub. Artifacts include a replica bronze dagger, miners’ tools, and a Victoria Cross awarded to local hero Robert Dunsire. Learn about the area’s natural heritage and industrial past, or enjoy our slideshow of historic images from the Rankin and OnFife Archives. We also offer a study area for those interested in researching the local Rankin Archive, full of newspaper clippings, photos, and documents that bring Methil’s history to life.

Warm Space – A Place to Rest Our Warm Space is open to anyone looking for a cosy spot to relax. Enjoy a hot drink, friendly chat, or simply take in our slideshow of local images. It’s a welcoming retreat in today’s challenging times.

Community Hub Our gallery hosts rotating exhibitions and events, from heritage talks to art workshops. We’ve partnered with local groups, schools, and artists to create community-driven displays. From children’s Bookbug sessions to Reminiscing Pods for those with dementia, the Centre connects people of all ages.

Explore Your Roots If your ancestors are from Methil or Levenmouth, our team can help you uncover their stories. We have images of old businesses and homes, and our Museum Assistant can assist with local history research.

Why Visit? Whether you’re interested in local history, connecting with the community, or just enjoying a peaceful break, Methil Heritage Centre has something for everyone. With exhibitions, events, and a warm atmosphere, we’re here to welcome you to a place where history and community thrive. Pop in for a visit – we look forward to seeing you soon!
