Fife Coast and Countryside Trust staff will lead this walk to the quaint village of Aberdour on day 2 of our journey towards St Andrews. Heading past Carlingnose Point Nature Reserve, you can appreciate the spectacular views of the estuary, the bridges, and the Edinburgh skyline. The path then descends to Port Laing beach, which was a WWI seaplane base, and past an active whinstone quarry. This area is rich in birdlife throughout the year. Then the path skirts the royal burgh of Inverkeithing with its historic buildings spanning four centuries. Follow the coast to St David’s Harbour at Dalgety Bay and then on to Downing Point. It’s worth going up the steps to see the WWII gun emplacements and panoramic views across the Firth of Forth. Pass Donibristle Chapel and the ruins of St Bridget’s Kirk onto the village of Aberdour. Aberdour boasts many attractions including the 14th Century castle and gardens, 16th Century doocot, St Fillan’s Church and the 2 award winning beaches, Black Sands and Silver Sands.
This is the second stage in our Beach of Dreams journey around the Fife coast. There are a few short steep sections with steps.

Beach of Dreams is a UK-wide coastal arts festival that explores the unique heritage, culture and climate future of our coastline. Fife Coast and Countryside Trust are delighted that Fife is the Scottish location for this creative programme. Presented by Kinetika, Beach of Dreams sees acclaimed and emerging artists commissioned UK-wide to create works to help local communities connect with the natural environment. In Fife, artist Julie Brook will create a tidal sculpture from locally sourced materials, inspired by walks along the Fife coastline and talks with residents and artists. She will also lead workshops with local schools and community groups in partnership with ArtMovesFife.
Please note that this is a one-way walk. The end time is approximate and depends on fitness levels and refreshments stops. It starts in North Queensferry where there is a railway station and local bus services. Ferrytoll Park and Ride – with bus services to Edinburgh and throughout Fife – is two miles away and Inverkeithing has a railway station with excellent services to/from the capital and other parts of Fife. The walk ends in the small village of Aberdour which has a railway station and local bus services for onward travel.
