When Peter and Gill arrived at Kirklands over 40 years ago, the garden was a blank canvas. There were a few rhododendrons and mature trees but little else. Since then, they have been busy creating the 2-acre garden and it is still an ongoing project.
Tulips, daffodils, erythroniums, trilliums, early rhododendrons and magnolias begin to flower in April. Bluebells follow creating a beautiful blue carpet and several varieties of Meconopsis in blues, whites and purples follow in May. Candelabra Primulas continue with rhododendrons and azaleas in all shades into June.
The garden includes a terraced walled vegetable garden, woodland garden, bog garden by the Saline Burn, rockery and herbaceous border. The garden has been created on a slop with various paths around the areas. The ancient woodland over the bridges takes you to the old mill lade path and a beautiful woodland walk.
