About

The Isle of May is one of the UK’s largest puffin colonies. During the summer months, when the instantly-recognisable seabirds nest in clifftop burrows, these comical birds are everywhere. There are puffins chatting on grassy tussocks, waddling across hillsides, flying in and out of burrows and swooping low overhead, their beaks full of sandeels.

It’s not only puffins who spend summer on the Isle of May. In the height of the breeding season, more than a quarter of a million seabirds nest here, including terns, guillemots and fulmars. It’s no wonder the island is also home to Scotland’s oldest bird observatory.

However, the island’s not just about birds. Monks, smugglers, Vikings and lighthouse keepers all feature in the Isle of May’s fascinating history.

There are regular boat trips from Anstruther to the Isle of May during the summer season.
