Golf has been played here for over 600 years. In fact, in the 16th century, King James VI renewed the charter allowing locals and visitors to play on this stretch of sandy grassland. Today’s course dates back to 1875 but several holes are from much older versions, providing a fascinating glimpse of golfing history (while the submarine periscope at the Starter’s Hut provides a unique way of checking it’s safe to play!).
The Golf Club House, Elie, one of the world’s oldest golf clubs, welcomes visiting golfers, ensuring, as King James VI decreed, that locals and visitors continue playing golf on Elie and Earlsferry Links.
Played from the shadow of the submarine periscope that towers over the starter’s hut, the blind drive over the hill at this opening hole is one of Elie’s signature shots. With out of bounds and a yawn of bunkers down the right anything more than a gentle fade will be punished. The large green will also test your putting from the off.
