THE FACTS

Dating back to 1552, the Old Course at St Andrews is the oldest golf course in the world.

Today’s golf can be traced back to St Andrews in 1764, when the rules of the modern game were set by the R&A.

The Old Course regularly hosts The Open, with qualifying rounds taking place on several Fife courses, including Scotscraig, Lundin Links and Ladybank , Fife’s only heathland golf course and one of a handful in Scotland.

Every year, A-List celebrities compete with top golf professionals in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which is held at The Old Course and Kingsbarns.

Other highly-prestigious golf tournaments regularly held on Fife courses include The Senior Open, The Genesis Scottish Open and the AIG Women’s Scottish Open.

Fife is a must-play destination – and not only because of the world-famous Old Course at St Andrews.

There are 50 incredible golf courses in the ancient Kingdom of Fife, where nature has perfectly sculpted the landscape for golf. Breathtaking championship links courses stretching along the coastline. Spectacular parkland and heathland courses bordered by lochs, forests and hills. World-class courses created by golf’s greatest players, past and present.

Fife truly is a golfer’s paradise. And it’s every golfer’s paradise. There are courses in Fife for all levels of skill, ability and budget. In Fife, golf’s open to all, with good value, accessible rounds readily available – and a warm welcome waiting at the end of the day in the local golf clubs, pubs and eating places.

Discover Golf’s Ancestral Roots

In 1552, the Archbishop of St Andrews granted permission for ‘gowff’ to be played on the grassy land between the beach and the town – and Fife’s been attracting gowffers ever since.

Find out about over 500 years of golfing history at The R&A World Golf Museum in St Andrews – and then bring history to life by walking The Old Course on a guided tour with a St Andrews Links expert around the 1st, 17th and 18th holes.

Step back in time to the 1920s by playing 9-holes at Kingarrock, the UK’s only hickory golf course. Visit Dunfermline Golf Club, home club of the two golfers who gave golf - and The 19th Hole - to the USA when they established the St Andrews Golf Club in New York in 1888. And enjoy every step, swing and putt on courses where golf has been played for hundreds of years.

“I’ll never forget striding across the Swilcan Bridge with my clubs at the end of my first round of The Old Course. I can remember every shot I played – from teeing off at the first to achieving par with my final put on the 18th Green. What an experience.”

Find Your Sweet Spot

In Fife, golfers are spoilt for choice!

The courses in and around St Andrews are on every visiting golfer’s bucket list. For very good reason.

But take a step away from the crowds with a game on one of the equally excellent nearby links courses at the splendidly-named Crail Golfing Society, Leven Links, and Dumbarnie Links, the latest Fife golf course to be awarded the ‘must-play’ accolade by golfers from across the globe.

Play a round or two on lesser-known Fife courses, such as Elie, where golf’s been played since 1589, Pitreavie, Cupar and Lundin Ladies – possibly the only golf course in the world with Standing Stones listed as a hazard!

Pitch. Putt. Practice. Go Crazy!

Crail has a putting green with greens that rival The Old Course for smoothness while just along the coast, Leven Putting Green recently reopened on the promenade.

Situated between the Old Course and the West Sands, the Himalayas is the home course of St Andrews Ladies’ Putting Club but members of the public are also allowed to test their putting skills there.

Looking for a fun way to keep fit on the golf course, how about a game of FootGolf or Disc Golf at Cluny Activities? There’s also an excellent driving range there for pre-bucket list course training.

Or head to the East Neuk of Fife for a round of crazy golf at Pittenweem’s West Braes, a fabulously mad putting green which was saved by the local community. There’s also Adventure Golf at Clayton Caravan Park near St Andrews and indoor crazy golf at Levenmouth.

Fife’s legendary 19th Holes

Savour the true golfing pleasure of a pint, a pie – and a run-down of every hook, putt, chip, birdie and bogie of a day’s golf.

As well as having an excellent reputation for their golf courses, Fife golf clubs are also renowned for their hospitality. The clubhouses are first class and offer a great selection of food and drinks - and good golfing craic!

Crail Golfing Society’s clubhouse has a highly-regarded restaurant with an unmissable view overlooking the 18th and out to sea. For a truly historic 19th hole, Dunfermline Golf Club is located in a 15th century castle – and no trip to St Andrews would be complete without a visit to The Jigger Inn at The Old Course Hotel.

The Crusoe

“Now I can take the train from Edinburgh to Leven for a day’s golf at one of the oldest - and, in my opinion, best - courses in the world, I play at Leven Links at least once a month.”
